Defender of the Argan
KATIMA'A, BORN TO SAVE THE ARGAN TREE.
If the story may seem too beautiful, the creation of Katima'A (eldest daughter of the House of Argan) is well and truly confused with the desire of its founder to save the Argan tree. This fascinating tree whose future was compromised in the year 2000 by the destruction of its forests, has since experienced a tremendous revival to which we hope to have contributed and still contribute.
Alongside personalities such as Professor Zoubida Charrouf, La Maison de l'Argan has become the spearhead of an enterprise to promote a fragile and complex ecosystem. By helping to preserve the Argan grove through the cosmetic development of Argan oil, and by placing Berber cooperatives at the heart of this reconquest, by providing technical means to enhance the quality of the oil and by acting directly with the authorities to enforce the independence of women's associations, La Maison de l'Argan has linked its history to the destiny of the Argan.
Today, more than sixty women work in the independent cooperative of Aït Baha, whose creation was directly financed by La Maison de l'Argan. Partners and friends of the heart, they are now prosperous and collaborate with clients around the world.
First "pilot" Ait Baha is now a flagship of GIE Targanine, it is not only the result of an investment but especially that of the efforts of a team to modernize the extraction processes and ensure the independence of women in charge of its management.
In line with its inspiration, the Maison de l'Argan has given the cooperative and all the means of production it had financed to the women who run it and manage it daily, without demanding exclusivity in return.
Katima'A was born from a personal, passionate and altruistic adventure, not the other way around. In this respect and if we like to transmit this story, it is essential not to reduce it to a commercial argument, hence our refusal of labels.
